Ch 6 covers tissues — groups of similar cells performing a specific function. Students learn about plant tissues (meristematic and permanent) and animal tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous).
Meristematic: actively dividing cells at root/shoot tips (apical), sides (lateral), and base of leaves (intercalary). Permanent tissues: simple — parenchyma (thin-walled, storage), collenchyma (thickened corners, flexible support), sclerenchyma (lignified, rigid — fibres, seed coat). Complex: xylem and phloem (vascular transport).
Epithelial: covers body surfaces (skin, lining of organs). Types: squamous, cuboidal, columnar, glandular. Connective: connects and supports — bone, blood, cartilage, fat (adipose), ligament, tendon. Muscular: striated (voluntary, skeletal), smooth (involuntary, organs), cardiac (involuntary, heart, self-stimulating). Nervous: neurons transmit impulses.

Blood connects different parts of the body — it transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products between organs. Its matrix (plasma) is liquid, and it contains cells (RBC, WBC, platelets) suspended in it. Despite being a fluid, it performs the connecting/transporting role of connective tissue.
