IB DP Biology explores life at every scale — from molecules and cells to ecosystems and the biosphere. The course integrates content learning with ethical considerations, international perspectives, and practical investigation.
Cell biology: cell theory, prokaryotes/eukaryotes, membrane structure, mitosis. Molecular biology: water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, DNA structure & replication, transcription & translation. Genetics: meiosis, Mendel's laws, genetic modification, inheritance patterns. Ecology: species interactions, energy flow, carbon & nitrogen cycles, climate change. Evolution: natural selection, evidence, speciation, cladistics. Human physiology: digestion, blood, gas exchange, neurons, hormones, reproduction.
Nucleic acids: DNA replication details, PCR, gel electrophoresis. Metabolism: cell respiration, photosynthesis (light-dependent & independent reactions). Plant biology: xylem, phloem, plant hormones. Genetics: gene pools, Hardy-Weinberg, polygenic inheritance. Animal physiology: antibody production, muscle contraction, kidney function, reproductive hormones.
Paper 1: MCQ, Paper 2: structured and extended response. Paper 3 (HL): data-based. IA (20%): individual investigation, typically an experimental study. Popular topics: effect of pH on enzyme activity, antibiotic resistance, plant growth factors, heart rate investigation.
Yes, IB allows any combination of Group 4 sciences. However, if you plan to study medicine, biochemistry, or a health science at university, most institutions recommend or require both Biology HL and Chemistry (SL or HL). Check your target university's requirements before choosing.
