Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) provides a rigorous foundation in physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry, preparing students for university-level study in chemistry, medicine, engineering, and related fields.
Atomic structure: electrons, protons, neutrons, isotopes, electron configurations (1s²2s²2p⁶...), ionisation energy. Bonding: ionic, covalent (including dative), metallic, van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, electronegativity, shapes of molecules (VSEPR). States of matter: ideal gas equation, moles. Energetics: enthalpy changes, Hess's law, bond energies. Kinetics: rate of reaction, Boltzmann distribution, activation energy. Equilibria: Le Chatelier, Kc, Kp. Organic: nomenclature, alkanes (free radical substitution), alkenes (electrophilic addition), alcohols, halogenoalkanes.
Energetics: Born–Haber cycles, entropy, Gibbs free energy. Kinetics: rate equation, order of reaction, rate-determining step. Equilibria: ionic equilibria, pH, buffers, solubility product. Electrochemistry: electrode potentials, electrochemical cells, Faraday. Transition metals: properties, complex ions, colour, catalysis. Organic: aldehydes/ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amino acids, polymers, spectroscopy (IR, NMR, mass spec).
Paper 1 (MCQ), Paper 2 (AS structured), Paper 3 (practical), Paper 4 (A2 structured), Paper 5 (planning/analysis). For practical papers: qualitative analysis (identifying ions) and quantitative analysis (titrations) are examined. Learn the colours of precipitates and flame test colours.
Both are rigorous. A Level Chemistry (9701) covers some topics in greater depth (especially organic mechanisms, energetics calculations, and transition metal chemistry) but has no IA component. IB Chemistry HL includes a 20% Internal Assessment (investigation). The exam format differs significantly. Content difficulty is broadly comparable, but A Level tends to test more procedural knowledge while IB tests more application and reflection.
